Well, Defiance is more or less complete, I've been editing the final chapter non-stop and having a ton of snags since Yuan has a much more massive role in Shards than he did in TOS. Annoying clich'ed one liners are all Yuan really says in the American GC version of TOS, he's a little more talkative in Shards as well as a lot more active since all that stuff he's alluded to doing in TOS he actually does in Shards/Defiance.  I've also been trying to avoiding fight scenes like the plague  -after all I have to give readers a reason to read Shards to the end, if they see the juicy part via Yuan they'll lose interest-  so it makes the final epilogue scenes in Defiance hard.

Add to that I'm trying to avoid a major downer/anti-climatic ending when I'm using a simular "sum-up" ploy that I've used previously in the same story.  The last chapter I've been working on for a month is, to say the least, a gamble.  I'm not only re-using the intensive flashback trick, but I'm prematurely breaking away from cannon and aluding to the fact that Shards will do so when all I've done is present Shards as a massive canon-centric piece...

And they ask me at work how can you get an ulcer when you're only twenty one?  *sighs*  Well if they ever find this site they might just know how.

Need to dash, tim'es up, will update later.

Yuan-ness and Defiance Spoilers

A really awesome Yuan pic (I went on a hunt Yuan pics and put in my computer spree this morning) this is one of many I've found...  I'm kinda going Yuan nutty at the moment.  Actually it started when I began writing "Defiance".  I love that story, I haven't had one come to me so smoothly since Double Edged Sword  (and that was one I wrote a loong long ago).  Defiance, to those unfamiliar with the story I'll offer a quick summery, The next post will go off into a rant that will be chalkfull with spoilers.

The summury:  Cruxis, order of heaven has existed for two long millenia, Kratos Aurion poses as the Angel of Death, falling into the role of being little more than Yggdrasil's pet murderer.  When Kratos is occupied with his assignment of guarding Tethe'alla's current Chosen Yggdrasil discovers that the declineing world of Tethe'alla has yet another person compatable with the Chosen ritual.  To avoid the catastrophy of having two Chosens in one world -and thus weakening of the belief in his self made religion which states only one Chosen is made every fifty years- Yggdrasil sends Yuan to "deal with the problem".

Yuan protests.  It's a mild, weak, gesture based little more then on the memories of a time when senseless death would have been abhorant to him.  But in the end he caves to Yggdrasil's demands and leaves Derris Kharlan, the sacred ground that has been his snactuary against life since the day Martel died.

After a quick flight (and crash landing) in Ozzette, he stumbles -more like falls through the roof of... but details, details- of the second Chosen.  When she looks upon him all his resolve fades, for her eyes... so like Martels.  Her innocence is unspoiled by the slow deteriation of her world, and she trusts him even as she fears him.  For she knows the lore of Cruxis, and has waited for the Angel of Death to take her home.  A quick search and a few questrions, and Yuan pieces together bits of the child's life.  Both her parents (half elves) were taken by the Desians only a few months ago, the child had been getting by eatting the rations set aside for the winter.

Since the girl had no friends or family Yuan took her hand, and in the shadows of the night spirited her away, hiding her in the flourishing world of Sylvarant.

From Defiance: Birth of the Renegades, chapter three  (edited versian):

" She, now snug as she could get, was looking up at him with hopeful green eyes.

Martel used to looked at him like that.

Her eyes once alive with hope, happiness, joy, curiosity.

This was life, this little one was life.  There had been so little life in his world, in any world....

Now look at him.  He mentally shook his head, a ruefull bitter gesture that he kept hidden from her to save the girl pain.  Here he was protecting this little one by picking her up and running.  Running and knowing even as he run that if Mithos ever caught onto this little game it would be the end of them both.

And he didn't even know her whole name..."

After weeks of playing guardian angel (Derris fa Gathsuun) the Lord of Heaven sent message to his missing Seraph that he was wanted back in Heaven.  Knowing that leaving Rene to live on her own would be the same as sentanceing the girl to death Yuan instead pursuaded Yggdrasil to allow him to build a ranch in Triet.  Yet his ploy and the beginings of his life of lies made a schism in the Seraphim of Cruxis.  Soul brother turned on soul brother as Yuan falsely testified to killing the other Tethe'alla Chosen.  In disgust with them all Kratos would have fled from heaven save for Yggdrasil's interfearance.  Punished, tormented for his lack of support, Kratos was left to writhe on the floor of heaven, and Yuan could do nothing save look on.

Upon the building of the new Ranch Yuan had much to contend with, raising the misplaced Chosen, fighting off the bandits that were hell bent on whiping out the "Desians" and having the dessert as thier own again...  And then there came the matter of a half elf bandit, a rogue cunning enough to slip past the many traps the Seraph had set up...

It was if nothing else hate on first sight, and hate blossomed to blood shed as time went on.

From Defiance Birth of the Renegades Chapter 10,

“You’re a lunatic. You’ve chained that poor kid to you in this place and you’re a vulking lunatic!” Z’eh roared.

“That’s your interpretation of what you see, nothing more nothing less. But, feel free to give killing me a try.”

Z’eh more then eagerly complied. Blade leading the false Desian smashed his blade into Yuan’s chest. It went though skin, bone, and lung without even slowing. The weapon didn’t tangle on rib, and even the hilt went through the blue haired half elf, though the wound was too small to actually accommodate the weapon’s passing.

Z’eh’s dark eyes were wide, his fist, still wound around the handle of his blade, was pressed against the white unstained front of Yuan’s tunic.

Yuan chuckled, his voice was pinched sounding, but his left lung had shut down to accommodate for the weapons coming, so he was only working with half the air to speak with. He smiled, a mocking little grin, and the bandit shuddered.

Time passed, and Yuan and Rene continued to bond.  Aquantanceship passed, became something of a father daughter relationship.  Rene became fast friends with the rash bandit Z'eh, seeing the older half elf as a big brother even as the bandit mock courted her to better get under Yuan's skin.

Yet things were not peaceful, not all matters whole.  Hatred still runs between Seraph and bandit.  Yuan struggles against the habbit of two millenia to regain his mortal soul  (In my version of TOS the Seraphim leave a very twisted existance, phasing out between being true "lifeless beings" and the people that they once were before their transformation.  The toxicocious still runs in thier blood, and while it doesn't kill them as it does the Chosens it puts sevear limitations on thier existance as they are unable to eat, sleep, or forget, anything.) even as Z'eh struggles to find a place in a world where all he was taught is a lie and Rene just struggles to find out what she is and will become.

That (sums up nineteen chapters) is what Defiance Birth of the Renegades is about at the moment.

Will there be the Renegades, where will they come from, they will be born from the sacrifices that Rene and Yuan make, and while Z'eh's role too is pivitol, his rashness might very well destroy that which Rene's sacrifice, and Yuan's labor bring forth in the two worlds.

Pre-Kharlan War history  (What I found by the River)

A family

B friends/childhood

C Religion

D homeland

E right before the end

Family:

Yuan barely rememberes anything about his family, it's not that he is incapable of remembering, but that he does not with to.  Therefore, despite his seraphim transformation and the entailed ability to look back at the past and relive it, and the aditional ability to never forget what he wills, Yuan deliberatly supresses his earliest memories as a Seraph, even as he has through all of his life.  So effective his willing of forgetfullness that he can not remember the name of the village he lived in for the first six or so years of his life, or even the sur-name of his family.  Mithos claims to have it in the records of Derris Kharlan, but Yuan has never expressed any interest in persuing any sort of reconsiliation with those who might distantly share his blood.  When ever he talks of his family, or when pressured, he speaks of the human mob that killed everyone in his village, he talks of fire, and then will fall silent and say nothing else no mater how the person questioning prys at him.

It is as if he supresses those memories in fear tht if ever they should leak out madness would take him.

As a passing note, never has he cast a fire spell in his life.  Which further backs up that the memory loss is something he willingly inflicts upon himself, and that whatever happened some four thousand years ago is still so massive that even subconsiously it restricts him from reaching his full potental as a magi.

Friends/childhood:

Because of the events in his early childhood, Yuan was more like a miniture adult then a true child.  Not one for play, or pranks, he was somber and cynical.  Rarely cracking a smile, but then the world of gross poverty he was in offered little for him to smile and laugh at.  He ran into Martel when he was wandering around the market place picking pockets.  The seven year old caught him rummaging around in her father's pocket.  When he was caught the girl's father quickly jumped to Yuan's defense, stating that the the child was his and he had thoughtless ly forgot to give the child money for an errand.  Handing the startled Yuan some of the family's last pieces of gald the human pated the startled boy on the head and told him to run off and not forget the chicken like last time.

Dazzed, Yuan wandered around the market, and much to his own surprise bought a chicken and hunted up Martel's family as they were leaving the market.  Yuan was adopted by the Yggdrasils for a time while they lived in the city Tiroo, and when Martel's Mother passed away after Mithos' birth, Matel suggested the bold plan to leave the city, find some place more tollerent of of half-elves, and she was going to take Yuan with her. The last remains of Martel's family left for Sylun, a small farming community, hoping for better lives.  Yuan spent his time there running errand, taking odd jobs, and visiting with the Yggdrasil's when he could, he developed a fast friendship wtih Martel, and a grudging one with Mithos.  Desperate to make ends meet Martel's father volenteered for the war, and sent what little stripand he could back regularly. three years later, when the letters stopped and the money stoped no one wondered why.  When the sword came back, as was the (warriors custom in those days in Sylvarant) Martel gave it to Yuan, saying that when he had left that when her father had left he had told her daughter that Yuan would look after the family should anything happen to him.  Grudgingly Yuan took the sword that he didn't even know how to use, and offered his home to the two.  After a bit of a talk Yuan remained in his house on the outskirts of the town, and very little changed, save that now he wore the dead soilders sword more often then not.

Religion:

Exposed to the monotheistic "Order of Mana" where the great tree was worshiped he heard much of peace and tranquility, and just as quickly scorned it.  Life was hard, his exspecially so, he turned his back on that faith and all others, embracing atheism with all his heart.  Over time Martel's faith in humanity and the Tree rubbed off so that he didn't scorn everyone elses faith, but he never embraced one of his own, though as a child he wasn't above winnowing from the collection box/plate when he was in need of easy funds.

Homeland:

See note on family

Right before the end:

Banidts attacked Sylune, casting bolts of fire and more mundane arrows into the vilalge, many were killed in the initial attack.  Snatching the short sword he'd been given Yuan raced from his house to Mithos and Martel's side.  He persuaded them (in Mithos' case with the flat of the blade between the ears) that abandoning the village was the only way.  They fled, and only when night had fallen did they return to find all the houses razed, looted, and a set of wagon tracks leading out.  Martel, shamed for have running, fearfull for the safety of those not killed (there were only a few bodies about) started to go after the tracks.  Of course Mithos went with her...

Grumbling the blue haired half elf went after them, not wanting to go but even more loth to leave Martel to the dangers of the world unprotected..

New "Shards" Fanart (PS I remembered my password and decided to update!)

Nice huh... a new picture from Raven, from chapter six of "Shards of Regeneration"...

Accompening text/scene...

“Kratos look out!” The boy in red’s eyes widened, and the mercenary threw himself to the right.  The very earth where he had been exploded in a mess of fire and sand. The wave of fire stopped slamming into the earth and it withdrew, condensed into a flickering or of fire then that too disappeared. And for just for one second a small red orb the size of a dog’s toy was visible, then as if offended with the staring it was getting the fire reappeared, whipped around the orb like a shroud, and gave the thing an illusion of being a miniature sun.

“Genis, cast a water spell on it, it’s an element of fire!” Raine yelled, then with a slight gesture sent a soft glowing light from her hands, it flew across the space between herself and the mercenary and settled on the man like a bird to roost and some how was absorbed into the man’s scorched back. Kratos nodded to the elf in thanks then to their horror walked right up to it and brought his blade down, the orb shuddered, and the fire shivered, then blasted out towards the mercenary. Kratos managed to throw himself to the side, to dive out of the way, and the orb spin around it’s awareness seemed to regard all of them then settle on Colette.

“No!” Lloyd jumped between the thing’s path of ‘sight’ and Colette, bradished his lone wooden sword at the thing and could almost hear it laugh at him.

Realizing he could do nothing Lloyd grabbed Colette’s limp hand and ran for the nearest sterdy looking wall.

“Aqua Edge! Uh oh…. No not that way!” Lloyd spun around, and seeing the spell shoot under the monster and still feeling its attention on him did the only thing he could think of. He shoved Colette behind the sanctuary, felt those razor sharp waves smash into his feet and fell on his face. The orb flickered, seemed to be choosing between him and Colette, then when that feeling of being watched settled on him Lloyd paled. He scrambled to his feet cussing up a storm as the fire around it grew darker, more intense.

He then ran the opposite direction he had shoved Colette into, right into… into a place where there were no safe walls to duck behind, it was all sand and… and one basket, the basket Kratos had been lugging around. Without another thought he dove behind it, tucked himself into a tiny ball, and as a last rational thought tried to curl up as much as he could over his sword so he wouldn’t lose his last weapon.

The air roared, he smelled the woven basket catch flame, smelled the burning minerals, and realized that it wasn’t enough, that the attack was going to burn through the rocks and get to him and if he moved that wave of fire would follow and… he closed his eyes, put his hands over those eyes, and with a very Noishe like whimper, hoped he was wrong about how stong that fire was and...

“Guadian!”

Lloyd lifted a hand that he’d put over an eye and looked around. A soft blue, the blue of starlight through ice, through crystal, was all around him. The smell of winter filled his nostrils, dazedly he tried to find his feet, and bumped into something that felt like a wall… no not a wall a shell, a shell of crystal!

“Stay down!” Kratos snapped at him, and Lloyd meekly nodded his head and lay down. That’s when he realized the dark shape in front of him was the mercenary. And some how, with his sword in front of him in a wired salute the mercenary was turning aside that raging fire. From the silver blue tinted world he could see the fires rage around him, saw but did not feel the heat or particularly moved when the sands turned molten and lapped at the edges of the shell like water at the bank of a river.

“C..cold…”

“Hold out a second more.” Kratos ordered calmly, “it’s almost over.”

I also got a picture (Four actually, but I can only put one up... dumb pic limit w/ non-prenium plan) from Animegurl64.  This is my favorite (the first one I think she sent me actually) a scene from chapter 24... hmmm 64... 24... meh nevermind.  Anyway she titled this one "Leash Training"

Scene/Text from chapter 24 to accompany pic...

Kratos only smirked and Lloyd brushed the worse of the grass off. His swords rattled in their sheathes so Lloyd pulled out one of the most noisy of the pair. He held a long, yet slender blade, it wasn’t a rapier, it wasn’t a broadsword, but something based off of a “katanna”. Kratos had bought for Lloyd in Asgard when he’d picked up a new shield for himself. Lloyd absently checked the blade, shifted it around so it wouldn’t jingle so much, and chuckled.

“Every town, every big monster fight, I seem to need new blades.”

“Sylvarant has a very poor selection of blade. After all, the world itself is decaying, would rotten steel make a good blade?”

“No, I guess not.” Lloyd frowned. “I’ve heard of steal rusting, I’ve never heard of it rotting before.”

“There are many things you haven’t seen or heard of before Lloyd, you are young, time will fix that.” Kratos smiled, and though he was smiling there was a glimmer of pain in his eyes.

“Yeah, think of it, in five years I’ll be as old as you. With aching bones and grey hair and…”

“Come along Lloyden…” Kratos snatched at the twin ribbons that were pinned to the long neck of his shirt by way of two buttons. The red clad swordsman let out a squawk and tried to fight as Kratos dragged him off.

Held by his “leashes” though, he couldn’t get away.

Family:

Kratos’ father Kanion Aurion was a soldier on the Kharlan war front.  Recruited at the age of fourteen he was a mediocre warrior and was wounded around his twenty third year by an enemy magi spell.  His arm cooked by a lightning spell from the elbow up he sacrificed his last months’ stipend to receive healing and while the limb appeared whole all sensation was lost and that made him in able to wield a sword.  He was turned out from the army and after a year of vagabond hood found himself back in his home town of Valeck.  Most of the fishing villagers were enamored with the veteran warrior and he was something of a hero.  While unable to fight for the army he was capable of fighting the local monsters and bandits with spear and knife.

Many women found this attractive auburn haired man a catch but only the priestess of Undine held his attention.  Illen Trav’llu, a quiet fair haired woman with night dark woman and worshiper of the sea maiden accepted Kanion’s pursuit of her hand with amused tolerance, and after a courtship of half a year set aside the robes of her priesthood and accepted Kanion’s hand as her own.  Both were passionate and hot tempered, like fire their emotions and love for each other blazed, but what Illen didn’t know or see was that that Kanion’s passion would warp into possessiveness.  The second she took his name he took her freedom, chaining her to much a life akin to the women that he’d seen in the army.

Little more then a slave, the once freedom loving worshiper of the sea maiden was now in perhaps the hardest captivity.  So long as she did not break the rules he had set for her, her life was easy.  But to step outside of any boundary or even the house without his surveillance earned her harsh physical retaliation.  If there is one word to sum up Kanion it is obedience, he demanded and accepted nothing short of total obedience from the world and from those round him in it.  While this trait made him a good soldier it made him a poor husband.  Ill at ease with the nature of civilian life Kanion was in town only for a small portion of the year, his love of the battle did not equal to that of the love of anyone else, and it came to him as a complete shock to find himself a Father.

That shock was something that Illen did not share.  She hid her first pregnancy and the miscarriage so well Kanion did not find out about it until years later Illen let that fact slip during a fight.

Kratos was born on the last day of the year.  Such a birth was considered unholy and the superstitious Kanion and most of the village demanded the cursed child be sacrificed to the water Goddess.  Illen not wanting to lose another child fought and was forced to watch in the restraining arms of her neighbors as they set the less then hour old infant upon a small boat and cast it out to the seas.

Screaming prayers to Undine, begging that her child be spared perhaps Illen was heard, for no matter the efforts of the villagers the small boat always drifted back to the shores.  After the fourth attempt the high priestess of Undine announced that the Goddess would not accept the child, that it was meant for another God and that none had right to interfere when that child would be sacrificed.  Until then they must treat it as a normal child and so following custom of Valeck the father and mother took their child and named him.

A child is given three names in Valeck…

The first by his mother and that is the name that is only used in the house of the child.

The second by the father and that name is known to the world.

The third name is given by the Gods upon reaching adult hood.

Named Kratos Aurion by his father Kanion, he was named Kra’sean by his mother, due to his banishment Undine did not grant him his last name but Origin gifted him another name, that is for a different section however.

Friends/childhood:

Due to the events that surround his birth few people wanted anything to do with Kratos.  He was a “Sith sas’ earu” or one born on death’s watch, and no one wanted that curse inflicted upon them.  He stayed more at home with his mother and watched the play of those his age with a detached interest, having learned in his first years that to join them would be to have all the games stop and for the children to scorn him.  He was a skilled cook, though at a young age he rejected and was known to hide under his blanket whenever his mother cooked tomatoes.

Disgusted that his child was so attached to Illen and was learning womanly tasks, Kanion took his son with him on his monster hunting at the age of six in efforts to mold him into a soldier so that the boy may continue his sires work.

The exposure of violence at a young age had an adverse on Kratos’s emotional development.  Kanion was a passionate warrior, he attacked with rage and lust, seeing the violence as a child Kratos developed a lack of emotion, he was estranged from the gentler emotions and while this gave him a composure that would sculpt him into a near perfect warrior it closed him off from most of the world.  Only with his mother did he show emotion, did he even cry and talk of the horrors he’d seen.  By his tenth year he wasn’t even doing that, he’d numbed himself to the point where the blood and fear of a fight didn’t effect him.

Religion:

The people of Valeck were a polytheist society, worshiping the Gods of life and death (the summon spirits minus Origin and Maxwell) Raised on a faith filled with lore and stories Kratos was taught of the elements and their lives and temperaments as he learned day to day tasks.  Everything had a meaning, from the tides to the stars to the grains of sand, there were small rituals, sayings, and bits of lore that Kratos was exposed to as a child that stayed with and influenced him strongly as an adult.  The key point of Kratos’ faith is not “good vs evil” rather it is a matter of life verses death.  The dead are honored but life is to be kept at all costs, those who violate life and take death wantonly, who torture, they are the only sinners in the world and should be punished.

While polytheist there were some heavy leanings towards Undine worship in Valeck and all saught favor of the water goddess as there livelyhoods were more based on her whims then on any other diety.

Homeland:

Valck off of the shores of the unnamed ocean that seperates Tethealla from Sylvarant, it is rumored that there is a shrine made by a Goddess beyond the horizon of Valeck and any fisherman who finds it will be blessed by the hands of the sea itself.  Despite that lore Valeck is a small fishing comunity, the men fish or hunt monsters around the town, the women gossip and tend all domestic tasks while the men bring back the food near sunset. Think Izoold but smaller...

Cultural note:  Sayings avbout water, cool headed, placid minded, six feet under, are common to Valeck and it is a local slur to be refered to as "fiery" "hot headed" or anything refered to flame which is water's opposite.

Right before the end:

At twelve Kratos' father became a more prominent figure in his life.  Normally only hunting monsters and staying away from home he became insistant on seeing his son, wanting to train the child to be a warroir.  Illen tried to stop him, stalling, concocting fake sickness', and when she was caught at long last...  One afternoon her unseemly defiance and sheltering of Kratos pushed Kanion too far.  Not exactly sane to begin with Kanion drew blade on his wife and pierced her "weak" heart with steel.

It was at that point the icy facade that Kratos held to his emotion broke, revealing a rage in the child that made Kanion's blood rages as nothing.  Driven to insanity by his hate Kratos wrenched the blade from his dead mother's bossum and turned it on his father.  When someone came to investigate they found Kratos with two bodies covered in blood, a knife in hand.  In that time justice was not known, honor had only a small place in that world, and Valeck was not one of them.  Draged to the square he was judged and scentenced in less then a moment.  He was stoned out of town and one neighbor of his, a friend of Kanion's, released a hunting dog on the child while he ran.  Still armed with the knife Kratos killed the dog and ran, he did not stop until after Valeck was far behind him.

He wandered around for days, desperately trying to hunt and foilage, and learned that the fleash of only a few monsters was eddible, sick by poisening himself with the fleash of monsters, weak, he was approuched by a group of youths called the "pack".  The pack consisted of the other children or fugitives that lingered outside of Valeck, they gathered together and attacked the caravan's of the nearest towns (Url, Valeck and... well the other one's mentioned in DES look there I'm lazy).  Kratos stayed with them until he recovered, and once sure that he had learned all he could from them demanded to leave the "pack".  To leave though one must kill the leader and during the fight again Kratos slid into a rage and massacured the leader in much the same way he killed his father.

He flead to the city of Url and met a mercenary band called the Crimson Talon, there he approuched them with information on the Pack and his proof was enough to get them thier bounty.  Impressed with the child's cool headed ness the aged swordsmaster Clarn accepted when the young boy walked up to him while the Pack's camp burned to the ground and asked that instead of a share of he bounty he be accepted into the Talon.  Clarn allowed Kratos to join them and took the child as his own, though it was a long time after the old man's death before Kratos realized what Clarn had meant to him and what Clarn had done in his behalf.
